Mountain Research and Development

A predominantly scientific publication ...

Mountain Research and Development (MRD), the leading development-oriented international journal specifically devoted to the world's mountains, has been published since 1981. It has established itself as a renowned international publication containing well-researched, peer-reviewed scientific articles by authors from around the world.

... that balances research with a commitment to sustainable mountain development.

MRD enhanced its scope in a new, expanded format, beginning in 2000. MRD has now completed its established research section with a new development section. The 'new' MRD links people concerned with mountain development and research. It provides guidelines and information on mountain initiatives and alerts the international community to timely actions, as well as the value of sharing information about mountain environments. MRD is now also an active member of the International Mountain Partnership..

Mountain Research and Development contains the following sections:

Development
Research
MountainPlatform
MountainNotes
MountainMedia

Development

This section contains lively and informative reporting on mountain development, including:

  • Examples of successful and innovative approaches to mountain development
  • Reports of people taking direct action in mountain environments
  • Discussion of social problems and issues in mountains throughout the world

Articles in this section are written by a wide array of authors such as development practitioners, scientists, and journalists, and accompanied by attractive colour photographs.

This section of the journal focuses directly on sustainable development of the world’s vital mountain ecosystems.

Share your experience with us!

Examination of successes in mountain development projects, reports by local people taking action to improve their lives and their environment, studies of indigenous knowledge and cultural diversity, and analyses of social and economic problems and their implications in mountain environments are examples of the topics included in the development section of MRD. The editors invite interested specialists to submit contributions to this section. Please consult the list of planned development topics and ask the editors about deadlines for submissions.

Research

MRD attaches great importance to maintaining its outstanding scientific research section. Coverage in this section ranges widely, from topics in natural science to anthropological and socio-economic issues. This section offers:

  • The best of recent research on mountains and mountain environments
  • Peer-reviewed papers only
  • Contributions of contemporary relevance
  • Scientific papers on development issues
  • Methodological innovations such as transdisciplinary research
  • Selected papers published in colour

Readers interested in a scientific approach will find timely, high-quality research on mountains, covering every continent and written in an engaging style by scholars from around the world. Development practitioners will find useful ideas in this section which they can apply in their own work.

A particular effort is made to encourage contributions by authors from developing countries. The editors continue the established MRD practice of offering editorial assistance to authors whose native language is not English.
